Will Byron Donalds Run for Florida Governor? An In-depth Analysis

Byron Donalds, a well-recognized figure in the Florida political scene, has recently been the subject of intense speculation. With eager anticipation for a potential gubernatorial run, Donalds has promised to make an announcement ‘soon’. The growing speculation has not only caused a buzz in local communities but has garnered national attention.

Donalds, a Republican congressman representing Naples, has continued to gain recognition within the party due to his staunch support for former President Donald Trump. The speculation about his potential candidacy for Florida governor has been further fueled by Trump’s public endorsement. Trump has not only endorsed Donalds but has also shared a poll showing him winning a hypothetical Republican primary, thereby amplifying the anticipation for Donalds’ official announcement.

The fervor surrounding Donalds’ potential candidacy has spread beyond American borders, with media outlets from places as far-flung as Nigeria to Washington, D.C. joining in the speculation. Headlines such as “‘Looks like that’s that.’ Trump may have just ended the Florida governor’s race” and “President Donald Trump pumps up Rep. Byron Donalds in race to succeed Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis” are just examples of the widespread coverage.

Trump’s Favorable Poll for Donalds

Further adding to this speculation is a poll posted by Trump that shows Donalds winning the theoretical Florida governor’s race. According to Victory Polling, Donalds secured 31% of the hypothetical vote, dominating a field including Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. In addition to sharing the results, Trump also announced a list of Donalds’ notable supporters, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

Potential Contenders in the Race

The polling landscape, however, has more potential contenders. A poll released by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab (PORL) put Florida’s first lady Casey DeSantis at the top of the list of potential gubernatorial candidates. With her high-profile and fundraising power, political experts opine that it would be unwise to count Casey DeSantis out of the race. Florida Gulf Coast University Professor Emeritus of political science Peter Bergerson believes that Casey’s overwhelming name recognition and access to traditional Republicans who vote in every election could make her a strong contender.

Donalds’ Connection to Trump

Donalds has been a long-time supporter of Trump, often describing himself as a “Black MAGA patriot,” and has been recognized as “President Trump’s strongest supporter in Congress”. He has frequently represented Trump on national media and has been seen alongside the president at public events, cementing his alliance with the former president.

Donalds’ Stance on the Speculation

The speculation about Donalds running for governor is not a recent phenomenon. In 2023, when his name was also being floated for speaker of the house or vice president, he did not rule out a gubernatorial run but maintained a wait-and-see stance. When asked about it by his supporters, he responded, “Have I thought about it? Of course I have. I think about everything, I really do, but you can’t time politics… (If) it comes around, I’ll talk to my wife, we’ll pray about it, look at where we are, make a decision and then away we go.”

The political world waits with bated breath for Donalds’ official word about his potential candidacy. Regardless of the decision, it is clear that his influence and popularity within the Republican party remain strong and will continue to shape Florida politics in the coming years.
