Will Byron Donalds Race for Florida Governor? Awaiting Official Announcement Amidst High Speculation

Florida Congressman Byron Donalds has been the subject of political speculation for some time now, with anticipation mounting over his potential announcement to run for the governorship of Florida. His candidacy for the governor’s seat has been largely conjectured following public endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who also shared a poll showing Donalds winning a hypothetical Republican primary.
Representing Naples, Donalds is a Republican who has remained a staunch supporter of Trump, earning him national recognition within the party. Though no official statement has been made by Donalds, numerous media outlets globally, from Nigeria to Washington, D.C., are conjecturing about his possible run for governorship based on Trump’s vocal support.
However, the official word from the Naples congressman is still pending. His latest message suggests an imminent announcement, as he reaffirms his commitment to work with Trump to uphold the greatness of Florida and America at large.
Donalds Emerges as a Potential Winner in Hypothetical Poll
Adding fuel to the speculation is a survey shared by Trump on his social media, detailing the possible outcomes of a theoretical Florida governor’s race. The survey, conducted by Victory Polling, showed Donalds dominating the field with 31% of the hypothetical vote, leaving other potential candidates such as Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez (4%), Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson (3%), and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (1%) behind.
Moreover, Trump shared a list of notable committed supporters for Donalds. The list includes prominent names such as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who was often speculated to be a likely Trump VP pick alongside Donalds during the presidential campaign.
Potential Contenders in the Race
While the speculation around Donalds’ candidacy gains momentum, another potential candidate cannot be ignored. Casey DeSantis, Florida’s first lady, emerged as a strong contender in another poll released by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab (PORL). With 30% of respondents giving her a favorable opinion, she tops the list of potential gubernatorial candidates.
Political science expert Peter Bergerson opines that Casey’s considerable name recognition, fund-raising prowess, and her strong connection with rank-and-file Republicans make her a formidable contender. He adds that primary elections are typically decided by these traditional Republican voters.
Byron Donalds: A Staunch Trump Supporter
Donalds, a self-described “Black MAGA patriot,” has been a steadfast supporter of Trump, often referred to as “President Trump’s strongest supporter in Congress.” He has been unflinching in his support for the Trump administration, standing firmly by the president’s side during some crucial political events and decisions. This unwavering commitment has made him a familiar face on national media.
Questions about whether Donalds would run for governor are not new. His name was being considered for speaker of the house or vice president in 2023. At that time, he stated that he wouldn’t rule out a gubernatorial run but was taking a wait-and-see stance. A few weeks later, he indicated that he had given thought to the idea, intimating that a decision would be made following discussions with his wife and prayer.
