Travis Hunter: The Jacksonville Jaguars’ Dual-Threat Rookie Primed for Stardom

The Jacksonville Jaguars have sparked a new trend within the NFL by utilizing their rookie sensation, Travis Hunter, on both sides of the ball. However, some are suggesting that the team should focus on his development as a full-time receiver while limiting his time as a cornerback. This bold strategy was the justification behind the Jaguars’ decision to trade up from No. 5 to No. 2 in the draft, believing that in Hunter, they were essentially acquiring two players for the price of one.

Through the first six games of his debut season, Hunter has appeared in 63% of the offensive snaps and 39% of the defensive snaps. While this unique approach has drawn attention, critics argue that he could deliver a more significant impact by focusing primarily on one position.

As it stands, Hunter has racked up 20 catches for 197 yards in his role as a receiver, yet he has not found the end zone. Only seven of these receptions have resulted in first downs. His defensive contributions, on the other hand, include one forced fumble but no interceptions. To maximize his potential, the Jaguars may need to reassess Hunter’s position on the team.

Before the season, Coach Liam Coen expressed confidence in Hunter’s dual-threat ability, even suggesting he could win both offensive and defensive rookie of the year honors. Currently, the odds of that happening are rather long, with Hunter being a 90-1 chance to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year (OROY) award and a 40-1 shot for the Defensive Rookie of the Year (DROY).

The Jacksonville Jaguars have invested heavily in Hunter, trading not only their fifth overall pick in 2025 but also a first-round pick in 2026, a second-round pick in 2025 (36th overall), and a fourth-round pick in 2025 (126th overall) to the Browns. In return, they were able to secure Hunter at No. 2 along with a fourth-round pick (104th overall) and a sixth-round pick (200th overall) in 2025.

Despite the high price, the Jaguars believe in the potential of their two-way star. However, the question remains whether they are currently maximizing his abilities. Could a more focused approach serve both Hunter and the team better?

This weekend, the Jaguars are set to face off against the Los Angeles Rams at the iconic Wembley Stadium. It will be Hunter’s first London game, and NFL UK fans are excited to witness this unique two-position star in action. As the NFL continues to evolve and experiment with strategies, Hunter’s performance could set a precedent for future dual-threat players. The game, which kicks off at 2.30pm local time, will be broadcast live on Sky Sports NFL.

While it’s clear that Hunter is a unique talent, the full extent of his potential remains to be seen. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how the Jaguars use their versatile rookie and whether their ambitious strategy will ultimately pay off.
