Tiger Woods Partnership with Augusta National: A New Era for City Golf

Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods has announced a new venture that extends his legacy beyond his impressive victories on the green. Woods and his TGR Design firm have partnered with Augusta National Golf Club to revive the Augusta Municipal Golf Course – popularly known as ‘The Patch’. A plan has been set in motion to transform the former municipal course into a state-of-the-art nine-hole short course. The development was announced recently by Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley.

This move signifies a major stride for the Augusta National Golf Club in its commitment to rejuvenate ‘The Patch’. The decision to collaborate with Woods, arguably the biggest name in the sport today, is proof of the club’s desire to realize this ambition. This partnership not only focuses on golf but also incorporates a significant educational aspect: a new STEAM facility. Funded by Augusta National, the facility will provide access to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math education for students in Richmond County.

The news of this landmark partnership comes weeks after Woods announced his return to the Masters, a surprising declaration considering he had recently revealed suffering a torn Achilles. Despite the injury hindrance, the golf legend continues to contribute significantly to the sport. His commitment to fostering the next generation of golfers and providing educational opportunities reflects his dedication to the game.

Ridley expressed enthusiasm about deepening Woods’ legacy with Augusta and the Masters. “This we felt was an enduring way that we could be forever connected with Tiger and all he’s done at the Masters and now all that he’s going to be doing in this community,” Ridley stated. He added that the idea to include Woods and his TGR Design firm in the renovation of the Patch stemmed from a conversation during a round of golf with Woods before the 2024 Masters.

Woods’ commitment to this project is underpinned by his passion for education and golf. He views the opportunity to work with Augusta National Golf Club and serve its surrounding community as genuinely special. “This is a transformational opportunity to empower the next generation and deliver meaningful educational programming and access to fun and affordable golf. I am excited to work alongside Augusta National and see both projects become a reality,” Woods commented.

The renovation of the Patch is already in motion and will include a new driving range, short game facility, clubhouse, outdoor pavilion space, and classroom space for educational programs. Augusta National Golf Club has also employed architects Tom Fazio and Beau Welling to redesign the original 18-hole layout at the Patch, and the refurbished course will feature a logo with a head of cabbage – a nod to the course’s nickname acquired from Red Douglas’s vegetable garden situated behind the 14th green.

The project’s completion is eagerly anticipated by the golf community and locals alike, with the Patch expected to open to the public around next year’s Masters. The TGR Learning Lab, which will be located at the site of a closed elementary school, is slated to open in 2028. This project is set to immortalize Tiger Woods’ legacy in Augusta and the Masters, and his contribution to the growth of golf and education in the city will surely be remembered for generations to come.
