Stock Market Rebounds on Expectations of US-China Trade War De-escalation
The stock market experienced a significant breakthrough, with the Dow rallying by 1,000 points and Nasdaq and S&P 500 gaining ground on hopes of a tariff ease. This rebound in stocks is linked to the statement by US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, that the ongoing US-China trade war is unsustainable and expected to de-escalate soon.
The Wall Street rally was given a significant boost following the Secretary’s optimistic forecast. The Dow closed with an increase of 1,017 points or 2.66%. The S&P 500 experienced a rise of 2.51% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 2.71%.
These gains were seen as a recovery from the recent losses the market experienced, following a major sell-off that gripped Wall Street. Stocks extended their gains after Bessent expressed his expectations for a de-escalation of the trade spat with China during a closed-door event hosted by JPMorgan Chase.
According to Bessent, both China and the United States are expected to de-escalate the trade war in the near future due to the extremely high tariffs effectively acting as embargoes on each other. For Bessent, the goal should be a rebalancing of trade rather than a complete decoupling between the two economies.
The stock market responded favorably to Bessent’s remarks, with the three major stock indexes hitting their highest levels of the day. Despite the recent rebound, the S&P 500 is on track for its worst month since 2022 and the Dow is set for its worst April since 1936, according to FactSet data.
While the market has shown signs of recovery, investors remain on edge amid lingering uncertainty about trade negotiations and President Donald Trump’s escalating criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The President’s continued tirade against Powell for not cutting interest rates has unnerved market watchers and questioned the independence of the Fed.
The situation becomes even more complex as the bond market also acts as a pressure point for the current administration. Any attempt to undermine the Fed’s independence would likely be met with a strong negative bond market reaction, forcing a reconsideration of such a move.
As a result of the uncertainty and tensions, investors have sought refuge in safe havens such as gold, which has hit a record high of over $3,500 a troy ounce. The yellow metal has risen more than 28% this year, surpassing its gain of 27% in the previous year.
With the ongoing tariffs and countermeasures, the International Monetary Fund warns that the global economic growth is expected to slow down to 2.8% this year, a significant drop from the 3.3% experienced last year. Particularly, the US economy is likely to grow only 1.8%, compared with 2.8% in 2024.
Amid this backdrop, investors are looking out for signs of progress in trade talks and are also focusing on the release of corporate earnings results for the first quarter. Tesla’s earnings results are much anticipated, as the company has seen a decline in its market value this year with its stock falling more than 40%.
In conclusion, the current market situation is influenced by a sentiment of “extreme fear”, according to CNN’s Fear and Greed index. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the US and global economy as investors eagerly await progress in the US-China trade talks.
