ShakeOut: A Lifesaver During Earthquakes, Unfolds in California Today

Earthquakes are unpredictable, and their consequences can be devastating. The “Big One,” a significant seismic event expected to happen anytime in California, is a prime example of this unpredictability. However, Californians can take the crucial step of preparedness through the annual ShakeOut earthquake drill. Conceived as a yearly event, ShakeOut trains millions of Californians to respond effectively when an earthquake strikes.

The Streamline is a platform that brings to you a detailed forecast and a roundup of the news to kickstart your day. Our article today throws light on the significance of the ShakeOut drill and the preparedness required to manage the aftermath of an earthquake.

It’s that time of the year again when Californians pause their daily routines to prepare for the possibility of an earthquake. The Great California ShakeOut is an annual drill where millions of Californians stop, drop, and cover. This year, San Diego County is participating in this crucial event, alongside other counties in the state.

As part of this event, about a million residents in San Diego County, alongside over 10.3 million Californians, will take part in the drill. They will all stop everything for a minute to “drop, cover, and hold on” at a designated time to simulate response during an earthquake.

The importance of this drill is emphasized by the quote on ShakeOut.org, “What we do to prepare now, before the next big earthquake, will determine how well we can survive and recover.” The drill aims to instill life-saving actions and prepare the public for an earthquake of up to a 7.0 magnitude and beyond.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services will showcase a “shake trailer” at Waterfront Park from 6 a.m. to noon. This trailer allows the public to experience a simulated earthquake and learn about earthquake early warning technology and preparedness tips.

Moreover, the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services, the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, and the San Diego Public Library are some of the local bodies that will participate in this event. Local elementary and high school districts, as well as various universities and colleges, will also be actively involved.

The primary objective of ShakeOut, according to ShakeOut.org, is to stress precautions during a 7.8-magnitude or larger quake along the southernmost portion of the San Andreas fault. Such an event could lead to massive damage, with waves of movement extending for hundreds of miles for over four minutes. The U.S. Geological Survey suggests that such a quake could result in around 2,000 deaths, tens of thousands of injuries, and more than $200 billion in damage. Hence, preparedness is of utmost importance.

To be self-sufficient following a major disaster, Californians are advised to have a first-aid kit, medications, food, and enough water for each member of a household to drink one gallon per day. Moreover, homeowners and renters should know how to turn off the gas in their residences in case of leaks.

Aside from fostering earthquake preparedness, The Streamline also brings you other significant news, including a report on an attack at a facility owned by the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office in Mexico. U.S. officials have issued a security alert for Americans in the area. In other news, active-duty service members received their mid-month paychecks recently after President Trump authorized the Pentagon to use available research and development funding. However, concerns remain as the government shutdown continues.

In the age of digitization, where streaming services are commonplace, many consumers are feeling the pinch of increasing monthly fees. Thus, as part of our consumer segment, we have also discussed ways to manage these subscriptions to keep costs down.

Thanks for waking up with us, and remember, preparedness is the first step towards resilience in the face of disasters like earthquakes. If you have a story you want ABC 10News to follow through on, feel free to reach out to us.
