On Tuesday, Mike DeBord succumbed to complications from a stroke he suffered in 2021. Born on February 7, 1956, in Muncie, Indiana, DeBord’s football journey began at Manchester College. He started all four years on the college’s offensive line, earning an NAIA All-American honorable mention and serving as the team’s captain in 1977.
DeBord’s coaching career kicked off in 1982, following his completion of a master’s degree from Ball State. He made remarkable strides in his career, working in various coaching roles at Franklin College, Fort Hays State University, Eastern Illinois, Ball State, and Colorado State. His expertise and dedication led to a breakthrough in the Big Ten at Northwestern in 1992, where he served as offensive line coach.
In 1993, DeBord joined Gary Moeller’s team at Michigan and stayed on when Lloyd Carr assumed the helm in 1995. He was promoted to the position of offensive coordinator in Ann Arbor in 1997, playing a pivotal role in guiding the Wolverines to their first national championship in almost half a century. He remained an integral part of the team until 1999.
By leveraging his successful tenure at Michigan, DeBord transitioned to the position of head coach at Central Michigan from 2000 to 2003. His post-Michigan career encompassed a stint in the NFL with stops in Seattle and Chicago, and he returned to Ann Arbor in 2013. His final return to Ann Arbor was in 2020, where he served as an offensive analyst for a year.
