Pope Francis’ Health Condition: A Detailed Overview
Pope Francis, the leading figure of the Roman Catholic Church, is currently facing significant health challenges. As reported by the Vatican, the Pope’s health condition continues to be critical, and he spent a peaceful night resting after the announcement was made.
As per the Vatican’s statement, the 88-year-old pontiff’s health had further deteriorated since the previous day, and he was described as “more unwell” than earlier. Pope Francis is currently undergoing treatment at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for pneumonia in both lungs. His health situation is so critical that he required several blood transfusions due to a low platelet count, linked to anemia.
Despite the worryingly critical state of his health, the Pope was reported to be alert and sitting in his armchair. However, he requires a high flow of oxygen, and his prognosis “remains guarded”. This stark assessment of the Pope’s health condition has left many in shock and concern, as the Vatican usually doesn’t release such detailed reports about the Pope’s health.
The Vatican also mentioned that the Pope continues to be alert and spent the day sitting in an armchair, even though he was suffering more than the previous day. It was quite a contrast to reports from a day earlier when doctors treating the Pope mentioned that he was responding to medication. However, they were clear that his condition was complex and that the slightest change of circumstance would upset a “delicate balance”.
While the Pope is a significant religious figure, it is important to remember that he is also a human being. His health began deteriorating around 14 February when he started experiencing difficulties breathing. Owing to an inflammation around the lungs, known as pleurisy, he developed in his adulthood, and the removal of part of one of his lungs at the age of 21, Pope Francis is especially prone to lung infections.
His current health crisis comes amidst a busy Jubilee year for the Catholic Church. It is a challenging time, especially with vast numbers of visitors expected in Rome and a major lineup of events for the Pope. Despite this, the Pope remains active – even in hospital, he went to pray in the chapel this week and had been reading in his chair.
However, in light of his worsening health, the Vatican had announced that he would not appear in public to lead prayer with pilgrims on Sunday, marking the second week in a row he will miss the event. This unfortunate news has deeply worried Catholics worldwide, who continue to follow updates about the Pope’s health closely.
Meanwhile, well-wishers continue to leave candles, flowers, and letters for the Pope outside Rome’s Gemelli hospital. The square outside St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican remained calm on Saturday evening, with no crowd gathering. Nevertheless, people passing through the square expressed their concern and closeness to the Pope.
