Peterson’s early surge propels KU to 90-82 exhibition victory at No. 11 Louisville
The KU men’s basketball team had a commendable victory against the 11th ranked Louisville Cardinals in an exhibition match, with a final score of 90-82. This was an impressive start for the season, thanks to the early surge demonstrated by top freshman recruit, Darryn Peterson.
Peterson stole the show in the first half with his exceptional performance, scoring six 3-pointers. This was a significant feat for the Kansas Jayhawks, who have struggled with 3-pointers in the past season where they made six or fewer 3-pointers in 15 of their 34 games. The team’s revamped roster, dominated by fresh talent, was evident in this game, and Peterson’s performance stood out.
However, Peterson was quiet during the second half of the game and did not play towards the end. Despite this, his team held their ground against the Cardinals, maintaining a safe distance and ultimately bagging a well-deserved victory.
Aside from Peterson, the Jayhawks showcased a balanced team effort. The game was quite messy, with both teams committing a total of 58 fouls. The Jayhawks struggled with their 3-pointers, with a combined 2-for-11, and the Cardinals had a worse shooting performance.
Xavier transfer Ryan Conwell matched Peterson’s impressive 26 points for the Cardinals. Three additional Cardinals also reached double figures, led by J’Vonne Hadley, with 13 points. In contrast, the Cardinals’ star freshman guard Mikel Brown Jr. struggled on the field, going 2-for-15 and scoring only 10 points.
KU center Flory Bidunga made significant contributions, making 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting with six rebounds, despite being limited to 23 minutes due to foul trouble. Redshirt freshman forward Bryson Tiller also impressed with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks.
Thanks to the collective efforts of Melvin Council Jr. and Elmarko Jackson, who scored 11 points each, the Jayhawks ended the game victoriously. This was largely a result of their free-throw shooting, where they combined 18-for-19.
The Cardinals held the lead for just over a minute during the game, reflecting the dominance of the Jayhawks. Peterson’s early scoring spree, including a 3-pointer, set the tone for the game. The Cardinals found it difficult to catch up, securing their first score nearly four minutes into the game.
The Cardinals did manage to tie the game on a three-point play by Khani Rooths. However, the Jayhawks quickly regained control, with Peterson returning from the bench to hit a 3-pointer, putting the Jayhawks ahead 21-16.
Despite Peterson sitting out the second half of the game, the Jayhawks managed to maintain their lead. This game was a testament to their collective effort and potential to perform under pressure.
The victory was not only a win on the scoreboard but also an indication of the potential of the revamped KU men’s basketball team. Their performance against the 11th-ranked Louisville Cardinals sets an optimistic tone for the upcoming season and has surely instilled confidence in the team and fans alike.
The Jayhawks will return to Lawrence to host Division II Fort Hays State for a second exhibition on Tuesday night. The ongoing season provides an exciting opportunity for these burgeoning players to showcase their talent and carve out successful careers. It is indeed an exhilarating time for KU Men’s Basketball.
