Massachusetts Weather Rollercoaster: From Warm to Cold, Light Snow Predicted

Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island are expected to experience a significant shift in weather conditions over the coming days. After enjoying a couple of warm days with temperatures soaring into the low 60s, residents across Greater Boston and much of Southern New England now brace themselves for a cold front that is set to overtake the region. This weather seesaw is not uncommon, particularly during this time of the year when nature is transitioning seasons.

A northerly flow, reinforced by the passing cold front, will draw in cooler Canadian air under a high-pressure system. Despite the generally bright and sunny day forecasted, residents are advised to break out their jackets as the temperatures are expected to be 15 to 25 degrees colder than the previous day’s high of 63 degrees. Boston, in particular, is expected to stall in the mid-40s, while the northern regions will see temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. The silver lining is the high pressure settling into the region, eliminating any wind that would have made it feel colder.

As the day progresses, clouds are expected to build across Southern New England. This development comes as the pocket of high pressure stalls, allowing a sliver of energy to work along the frontal boundary. Light rain showers are predicted to occur, moving from west to east, but they are expected to hold off in Boston until after the evening commute. These showers could persist through midnight.

As temperatures slip closer to freezing, snow showers are a possibility across Massachusetts. A light coating of snow is anticipated, but due to the recent warm temperatures, road temperatures should remain above freezing, melting away any accumulating snow and ensuring the roads stay wet rather than icy. This is a key factor in maintaining road safety during this weather transition.

As we look ahead, Thursday will largely mimic today in terms of temperatures, remaining in the mid-40s with calm winds. The morning commute is expected to be dry under mostly cloudy skies. Unfortunately, these clouds are predicted to linger through Thursday night, which might obstruct the view of the total lunar eclipse that will peak around 3 a.m. on Friday. The best chance to observe the unobstructed eclipse will be across Northern New England.

Different regions will experience varying weather conditions. Greater Boston will have a colder day with highs in the mid-40s. The day will start with a mostly sunny morning, followed by increasing clouds in the afternoon with scattered rain or snow showers tonight. Central and Western Mass will experience temperatures in the mid-40s, with mostly sunny skies turning to clouds in the afternoon. Light rain showers could work into these regions before the commute home, with some snowflakes falling as night approaches. A light coating of snow is also expected here.

Meanwhile, the Cape and Islands will see highs in the low 40s with partly to mostly sunny skies and a breeze about 10 mph. Rain showers are expected to arrive later at night. Rhode Island will see temperatures rise only to the mid-to upper 40s under light winds. Sunny skies will turn cloudy later in the afternoon with a mix of scattered light rain or snow showers during the night.

Lastly, New Hampshire will be colder today with highs only reaching the upper 30s and low 40s. Mostly sunny skies with scattered snow showers are possible around the evening commute and later. Meanwhile, the rest of Northern New England, including Vermont and Maine, will struggle to reach 40 degrees with a northerly flow in place. Mostly sunny skies will give way to a few clouds in the afternoon. Vermont is expected to see a couple of scattered snow showers this evening while Maine stays mostly dry.

In conclusion, the weather is certainly doing its March things, giving us temperatures up and down. As we gear up for a cool Thursday and a potential warm-up on Friday, it is advisable to stay informed about the latest weather updates and plan your days accordingly.
