Governor Janet Mills’ Response to Federal Investigation into Alleged Title IX Violations in Maine
On February 21, 2025, the Governor of Maine, Janet Mills, released a statement in response to the U.S. Department of Education’s directive to the Maine Department of Education to initiate an investigation into the state over alleged Title IX violations. Governor Mills, who has a distinguished career as a District Attorney, Attorney General and now Governor, passionately defended the rule of law in Maine and America against the federal government’s move.
According to Mills, the crux of the issue is the respect for the rule of law in the United States. She emphasized that no president, whether Republican or Democrat, has the authority to withhold federal funding in an attempt to coerce compliance with their will. Mills argued that such an action not only violates the U.S. Constitution but also breaches the laws that she swore an oath to uphold.
The governor also highlighted the importance of this investigation extending beyond the state of Maine. She stated that although Maine might be one of the first states to undergo an investigation by the current federal administration, it certainly won’t be the last. Mills suggested that the President of the United States has targeted a specific group on a particular issue addressed by Maine law. She asked her constituents to consider who and what could be targeted next, questioning what the implications could be for racial or religious minorities or those who look or think differently.
In a further critique of the President, Mills insisted that in America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, regardless of how much they may attempt to act as such. She argued that it is the rule of law that prevents them from assuming such a role.
Despite the impending investigation, Mills remained resolute, expressing her belief that the outcome of this “politically directed investigation” is predetermined. She pledged that her administration would cooperate with the Attorney General to defend the interests of Maine people in court. She reiterated her belief that the investigation is not merely about who can compete on the athletic field but about whether a President can force compliance with their will without respect for the rule of law governing the nation. Mills expressed her conviction that the President could not force such compliance.
The Governor’s statement underscores her commitment to defending the rule of law and the Constitution. It reflects her decades-long dedication to justice and her belief in the principles that govern the United States. The federal investigation into alleged Title IX violations in Maine has ignited a wider debate about the power of the presidency and the respect for the rule of law in America. Regardless of the outcome, this situation serves as a vivid reminder of the importance of checks and balances in the American political system and the ongoing struggle to uphold them.
