From Unranked to Unstoppable: The Incredible Journey of Janice Tjen at the US Open
The US Open, one of the most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments, has always been a platform that brings forth inspiring stories of triumph, grit, and determination. The 2025 edition of the US Open is no different, with the spotlight shining brightly on the young Indonesian tennis player, Janice Tjen. She made history by not just making her debut in a Grand Slam but also recording one of the most significant victories for her country in two decades.
Janice Tjen, a relative unknown in the world of elite tennis a year ago, had a dream run in the US Open by winning her maiden Grand Slam match against Veronika Kudermetova, a former Top 10 player. This stunning victory marks the most significant triumph for Indonesia in a Grand Slam main draw in the last 20 years.
Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2002, Tjen had no tennis ranking a little over 12 months ago. She was slowly climbing the ranks in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour – a far cry from the glitz and glamour of the Grand Slams. However, her steady progress in the ITF tournaments helped her break into the top 150 tennis players worldwide, prompting her qualification for the US Open.
Illustrating a remarkable display of skill and perseverance, Tjen sailed through the US Open qualifications. She asserted her dominance over established players like Varvara Lepchenko, Maja Chwalinska, and Aoi Ito, exhibiting the potential to be a formidable contender in the main event.
In the first round, Tjen proved her mettle against Veronika Kudermetova. Despite Kudermetova’s experience and her previous successes in the WTA Tour and US Open, Tjen emerged victorious in a grueling three-set match that lasted over two hours. With a scoreline of 6-4, 4-6, and 6-4, Tjen not only surpassed expectations but also ended Indonesia’s 22-year long wait for a victory in a Grand Slam main draw.
In the span of 15 months, Tjen’s journey from an unranked player to being one of the top 150 players in the world is nothing short of impressive. With 13 individual titles under her belt during this period and a formidable winning record of 100 victories out of 113 matches, Tjen cemented her place among the world’s top tennis players.
Her remarkable feat in the US Open reiterates the unpredictable nature of the sport and the emergence of new talent challenging the established order. The story of Janice Tjen is a testament to the transformative power of sports and the magic of the US Open – a stage where dreams come true.
