Experience the Thrill at the Chicago Air and Water Show

The Chicago Air and Water Show, a mainstay of summer in the Windy City since 1959, is set to thrill spectators once again with daredevil acts in the sky and on the water. As the largest free admission air and water exhibition of its kind in the country, the event promises to offer a spectacle, with the dramatic city skyline serving as a backdrop.

The show will take over Chicago’s downtown skies promising an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors alike. However, the event itself won’t be the only time you can see planes flying in and around the city this week. The free event over Lake Michigan is set to take place on August 16 and 17, but according to the schedule, rehearsals will also be happening on August 15, offering residents and visitors additional opportunities to marvel at the unique performance of the planes in the sky.

More than a million spectators are expected to attend the event. The event will take place at North Avenue Beach, with scenic views available from anywhere along the lakefront from Fullerton to Oak Street. For those looking for unique vantage points, many rooftop bars, waterfront restaurants, and several cruise companies offer special events on the day of the Air and Water Show.

The schedule for the show will be decided on the morning of the event by the pilots. Each day of the weekend, the show will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., providing ample time for attendees to immerse themselves in the spectacle.

This year will feature a variety of performers, both military and civilian. While the U.S. Navy Blue Angels won’t be present this year, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights are set to headline the 2025 event. Among other notable participants are the Illinois Air National Guard KC-135-126th Air Refueling Wing, Maryland Air National Guard A-10’s-104th Fighter Squadron, and the U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue Demo. The full lineup includes various other military performers and civilian performers, promising a show that is both diverse and exhilarating.

Beyond the dynamic performances in the air, attendees can also expect to witness various elements of water show, including the Chicago Fire Department Air / Sea Rescue and the U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 (Osprey) Demo-Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365.

The city of Chicago has always prioritized safety in conducting this show. All pilots perform stunts over the water in a set safety area, and safety precautions are taken at all times before, during, and after the show.

The Chicago Air and Water Show is a spectacle that has been a part of Chicago’s summertime tradition for more than six decades. With this year’s lineup of performances, it promises to continue its tradition of delivering a thrilling experience for all attendees, offering a blend of exhilarating air and water performances that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
