Eagles Trade QB Kenny Pickett to Browns in a Strategic Move

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a strategic move by trading quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Cleveland Browns, as reported by reliable sources. In return, the Eagles will receive quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick. This trade is a significant development, marking a new chapter for both Pickett and the Browns.

Considering the Browns’ current situation, the trade comes at a pivotal moment. Deshaun Watson, the Browns’ veteran passer, is anticipated to sit out much of the 2025 season due to a second right Achilles tendon tear. The Browns were thus expected to enter the free agency market in search of an experienced passer.

Yet, with a limited salary cap space of approximately $13 million, the Browns had to pursue less expensive options. Despite this constraint, General Manager Andrew Berry had stated that the team’s financial situation would not limit them from seizing the right opportunity.

The trade of Thompson-Robinson, the only other quarterback contracted for the 2025 season, to the Eagles indicates that the Browns are likely to continue their search for additional players. Notable veterans such as Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz, and Kirk Cousins, if the latter is released, are expected to be on the Browns’ radar.

Pickett, set to turn 27 this June, is a promising addition to the Browns. The former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers was selected 20th overall in the 2022 NFL draft. During his two-year tenure with the Steelers, Pickett had a respectable 14-10 record as a starter, completing 62.6% of his attempts for 4,474 yards. His performance included 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

In March of last year, the Steelers traded Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks. During his single season with the Super Bowl champion Eagles, Pickett served as Jalen Hurts’ backup and made a single start. He completed 25 of 42 passes for 291 yards, scoring two touchdowns and one interception.

This trade marks the final year of Pickett’s rookie contract. Meanwhile, Thompson-Robinson will be starting a new chapter with the Eagles. The 25-year-old quarterback started five games in his two seasons with the Browns, completing 121 of 230 passes (52.6%) for 880 yards, one touchdown, and 10 interceptions. He also ran for an additional 187 yards on 35 carries.

This trade represents a pivotal moment for both teams, with each seeking to optimize their rosters for the upcoming season. It remains to be seen how this strategic move will affect the teams’ performance in the long run.
