Defending the Rule of Law: Governor Janet Mills’ Response to U.S. Department of Education Investigation

On February 21, 2025, Governor Janet Mills of Maine made a powerful statement in response to a notice from the U.S. Department of Education announcing an investigation into the state. The reason behind such investigation is alleged violations of Title IX, a federal law that prohibits educational institutions from discriminating on the basis of sex.
In her statement, Governor Mills expressed her commitment to upholding the rule of law in Maine and throughout the United States, a principle she has staunchly defended throughout her career as a District Attorney, Attorney General, and now as Governor.
She noted the critical nature of the issue at stake, which transcends beyond mere politics. It is about the rule of law in our country. Her dedication and commitment towards maintaining this fundamental principle underscore her belief in the importance of the democratic process and the sanctity of the law.
Expressing her concern, Governor Mills stated, “No President – Republican or Democrat – can withhold Federal funding authorized and appropriated by Congress and paid for by Maine taxpayers in an attempt to coerce someone into compliance with his will. It is a violation of our Constitution and of our laws, which I took an oath to uphold.” This statement reflects her strong opposition to any form of coercion or abuse of power by any government official, regardless of their position or political affiliations.
Governor Mills pointed out that Maine may be one of the first states under investigation by his Administration, but it certainly won’t be the last. This issue extends beyond a single state or a single issue. It pertains to the very foundations of our democracy and the principles of fairness, justice, and respect for the law. She urged the citizens to consider the broader implications of this action and to evaluate the potential consequences such as targeting of specific groups or individuals based on their race, religion, appearance, or differing views.
In a stern warning, she reminded the nation that, in America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, and it is the rule of law that prevents him from being so. She voiced her concerns about the future and the direction the country might take if such behavior is not checked and countered.
Despite anticipating that the outcome of this politically directed investigation is likely predetermined, Governor Mills affirmed her commitment to protect the interests of Maine people in the court of law. She urged not to be misled by the apparent triviality of the issue, stating that it is not just about who can compete on the athletic field, but about the President’s ability to force compliance with his will, without regard for the law. She affirmed her belief that he cannot do so.
Through her actions and words, Governor Janet Mills has demonstrated her unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of the people, and prevent the abuse of power. Her strong stand is a testament to her dedication to serving the people of Maine and to preserving the principles on which the nation was founded.
