Colin Farrell’s Difficult Decision: Moving His Son with Angelman Syndrome into a Care Facility

Renowned actor Colin Farrell, noted for his roles in films such as ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and the Golden Globe-winning HBO series ‘The Penguin,’ has recently announced his decision to place his son, James, in a long-term care facility. James Farrell, 21, lives with Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and causes developmental delays.

This decision, as shared by Farrell, has not been an easy one. It stems from deep concerns about his son’s future, particularly concerning the possibility of his son being left alone if anything were to happen to his parents. Notably, Farrell and his ex-partner, Kim Bordenave, are jointly exploring options to ensure a fulfilling and happy future for their son.

In an interview with Candis Magazine, the 48-year-old actor said, “But my horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James’ mother, Kim, has a car crash and she’s taken too – and then James is on his own?” This candid reflection reveals the often unspoken fears of parents with children who have special needs, adding a compelling personal narrative to the ongoing dialogue about long-term care for individuals with disabilities.

Farrell and Bordenave aim to find a care facility while they are still alive and sufficiently healthy to visit and take James out occasionally. They aspire for James to lead a full and content life, connected to his surroundings, rather than becoming a ward of the state, a situation they would have no control over.

Farrell has been a vocal advocate for families with children who have special needs. He launched a foundation to offer support for people and families with intellectual disabilities in honor of his son. He has opened up about the challenges faced when James turned 21 in September 2024, a milestone that marked the end of accessibility to affordable programs that cater to families with children who have special needs.

“Once your child turns 21, they’re kind of on their own,” Farrell told People. “All the safeguards that are put in place – special ed classes – that all goes away. So, you’re left with a young adult who should be an integrated part of our modern society and more often than not is left behind.”

In sharing his story, Farrell provides a poignant perspective on the often-overlooked aspects of raising a child with special needs. His story gives voice to the complexities involved in making difficult decisions for a child’s long-term care. It’s a heartrending decision many parents have to make, balancing their child’s immediate needs with the uncertainty of their own future.

Among his reminiscences, Farrell shares a beautiful, heart-touching moment when he watched his son walk for the first time. “And I stood over there, and she let him go, and he just came to [me]. It was so profound. It was magic,” the Irish actor recalled. This moment serves as a testament to the deep bond between Farrell and his son, and a reminder of the small miracles that bring joy and hope amidst life’s challenges.

Farrell also has a 14-year-old son, Henry Tadeusz Farrell, with Alicja Bachleda-Curuś. As he continues to navigate the complex journey of parenthood and advocacy, Colin Farrell’s story serves as both an inspiration and a call to action for greater understanding and support for families coping with similar circumstances.
