Brazil Dismisses Head Coach Dorival Junior Following Defeat to Argentina in World Cup Qualifiers
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), in a recent announcement, confirmed the dismissal of Dorival Júnior from his role as the head coach of the national team. His sacking follows the humiliating 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers. The loss, which many are terming as the final blow to Dorival’s tenure, marked his fifth defeat in the 14 games he managed in the South American group of the World Cup qualifiers.
Despite the dismissal, Brazil currently sits fourth in the group and remains in a good position to qualify for the 2026 finals. The journey, however, will now have to continue without Dorival, who took charge in January 2024 and led Brazil through 16 games, boasting a record of seven wins, six draws, and three losses.
The 62-year-old Dorival, notable for managing several leading Brazilian clubs, started his stint with the national team on a promising note, with a 1-0 victory over England in a friendly match. Despite the relatively successful start and his prowess at the club level, particularly leading Flamengo to the 2022 Copa Libertadores, Dorival’s tenure with the national team was marred by inconsistent performances and mounting pressure.
His journey with the Brazil national team came to a tumultuous conclusion following the defeat to Argentina, who have not only confirmed their spot in the World Cup but are also one of Brazil’s fiercest rivals. The loss was a significant setback for the team and its management, resulting in the CBF deciding to part ways with Dorival.
In their announcement regarding Dorival’s departure, the CBF expressed gratitude for his service and wished him success for his future career. The statement also underlined CBF’s immediate priority of finding a suitable replacement to lead Brazil in the upcoming matches and ensure their qualification to the World Cup 2026 finals.
Prior to Dorival’s appointment, Brazil had unsuccessfully attempted to procure the services of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. With Dorival’s exit, speculations regarding Ancelotti’s recruitment have resurfaced, especially after a recent report suggested that Brazil is keen on discussing the possibility of his leadership at the 2026 World Cup. However, according to Brazilian media, the current favorite for the position is Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus.
While the search for a new coach is underway, the focus remains on the national team’s performance in the World Cup qualifiers. With the team still in a strong position to reach the finals, the new appointment’s primary task will be to ensure the team’s progression without further hitches and improve the team’s performance overall.
