Boston Bruins: Trade Speculations and Future of Brandon Carlo

As the National Hockey League (NHL) trade deadline looms, the future of Brandon Carlo, the 6-foot-5 defenseman of Boston Bruins, seems to have been decided. His name has been bouncing around in trade talks for the past few days, but reports suggest that the Boston Bruins have made a decision on his future despite him being a hot commodity, especially for teams in Western Canada such as the Calgary Flames.

Deemed a veteran defenseman, Carlo has spent his entire NHL career playing for the Boston Bruins. He made his debut in the 2016-2017 season and has since played a significant role in the team’s defense. Despite the speculated trade talks, it’s still uncertain whether Carlo will remain a Bruins after the trade deadline on Friday afternoon.

According to insider Anthony Di Marco from The Daily Faceoff, the Calgary Flames have shown interest in Carlo. It appears that the Flames have reached out to inquire about the defenseman. While details are yet to be ironed out, Calgary’s interest is evident. This comes as no surprise as most players in the Bruins’ roster are available for the right price.

The Calgary Flames are currently teetering on the edge of securing the second wild card playoff berth in the Western Conference. Beefing up their defensive lineup could provide the Flames with the needed support to solidify their position. Moreover, acquiring Carlo could be a strategic move for the Flames as they have the 13th-best prospect pool in the league, according to The Athletic’s 2025 rankings. They also have an ample number of draft picks, including two first-rounders in both 2025 and 2026.

Apart from his experience, Carlo brings a lot to the table. He is signed up for two more seasons at a team-friendly salary cap hit of $4.1 million. He possesses a 10-team no-trade clause in his contract for the 2024-25 season. Although Carlo isn’t known for his offensive contributions — with only nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 61 games this season, he is regarded as a strong defensive defenseman who can play 20-plus minutes per game, block shots, defend the opponent’s top forwards and kill penalties.

These attributes make him an attractive option for the Calgary Flames who rank 27th in penalty killing with a 73.9 percent success rate. Given his age, size, playoff experience and strong defensive skills, it wouldn’t be surprising if Carlo sees increased interest in the trade market before the deadline.

While the Boston Bruins are among the most interesting teams to watch at the trade deadline, it’s yet to be seen how the team will maneuver its roster. They’re only four points out of a wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but their performance throughout the season suggests they might not make it far in the postseason. As such, selling could be the smartest path for the Bruins to take at the trade deadline. But with the playoffs still within reach, it remains to be seen how many players Boston is willing to part with before Friday’s deadline.

It’s a tense time for all involved, not just for Carlo and the Bruins, but for other teams and players as well. As the clock ticks towards the trade deadline, only time will tell how the dynamics of the NHL will shift and change in the coming days.
