Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Market React to Inflation and Tariff Concerns
In a week of uncertainty and anticipation, the cryptocurrency market has seen significant shifts. Bitcoin and ether, leading tokens in the market, have experienced noticeable drops coupled with a grim inflation outlook and looming tariff uncertainties.
As the end of the week concluded, Bitcoin traded at just over $81,500 during Asian morning hours on a Monday. This came after major tokens such as XRP, Cardano’s ADA, Solana’s SOL, Dogecoin (DOGE), and ether (ETH) also faced losses. The cryptocurrency market, which had seen a brief rally last week, lost momentum due to these factors, triggering a downward slide.
Simultaneously, global stock markets opened lower for the fourth consecutive day. The anticipation of United States President Donald Trump’s upcoming announcement of new tariffs, set to be revealed on April 2, contributed to this trend. Export-heavy economies are apprehensive about market access to the U.S., resulting in the Hang Seng index dropping by 1.7% and the Nikkei 225 by 3.8%. Korea’s KOPSI index was also in the red, falling by 3%.
Apart from the cryptocurrency and stock markets, safe-haven assets like gold reached an all-time high. U.S. Treasury yields also dropped due to increased demand. Portfolio managers worldwide have adopted cautious strategies amidst the potential economic fallout from the impending tariffs. These strategies include reducing risk or avoiding large investments.
On the brighter side, Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek announced that the SEC is closing its investigation into the crypto exchange. In a related development, Galaxy Digital agreed to pay $200 million in a settlement with the New York Attorney General’s office pertaining to Luna investments. Ava Labs president John Wu also commented on the recent regulatory advancements in the crypto world.
Even as the cryptocurrency market experiences fluctuations, Bitcoin ETFs witnessed weekly inflows of $196 million, according to SoSoValue. However, ether ETFs faced net outflows of just over $8 million. With the ongoing trade war escalation, traders are bracing themselves for further developments in the market.
Data from Tokenomist.ai shows that $751.2 million in unlocks are scheduled this week, including SUI and DYDX, putting the weekly unlock cycle in the middle of the pack. Unlocks are anticipated to pick up in May, with roughly $4.4 billion (at current market prices) in tokens set to be unlocked.
In conclusion, the cryptocurrency market, along with the global stock market, is in a state of anticipation and caution. As economic indicators remain uncertain, investors are adopting varied strategies to navigate the volatile landscape. As we move into the new week, all eyes will be on President Trump’s upcoming tariff announcement and its potential impact on the markets.
