Apple Unveils New Lower-Priced iPhone With A.I. Features

In a significant move, Apple has announced the introduction of their new lower-priced iPhone, the iPhone 16e, complete with artificial intelligence (A.I.) features. Recognized as the first update to the company’s affordable model since 2022, this new phone brings an exciting array of features to consumers at a retail price of $599.
Less than a year after introducing its artificial intelligence capabilities, Apple has decided to incorporate this feature into its most cost-efficient model. The A.I. system, dubbed Apple Intelligence, features such capabilities as notification summaries and writing recommendations in English. Furthermore, these artificial intelligence attributes are expected to expand into other languages such as Chinese, Portuguese, and localized English for India over the ensuing months.
The iPhone 16e stands out from previous models as it eliminates the home button and Touch ID, which have been phased out. In contrast, it adopts a facial recognition system, Face ID to unlock the device. This technology has been a standard feature on most iPhones since its launch in 2017.
The introduction of the iPhone 16e serves as the first update to the company’s inexpensive smartphone line since 2022, taking the place of the company’s iPhone SE. The affordable models have been instrumental in getting Apple’s signature product into the hands of price-conscious customers, who frequently upgrade to more costly models when they decide to purchase a new phone.
Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone 16e comes at a pivotal time. The company’s iPhone business has been experiencing a slump, with sales down 2 percent from their peak of $205.5 billion in 2022. Despite these issues, Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, asserts that the iPhone’s struggles can be attributed to the limited availability of Apple Intelligence. However, market research suggests that A.I. isn’t a significant reason consumers are opting to buy new phones.
Interestingly, Apple stands to gain from elevating the price of its introductory model. The iPhone 16e is 40 percent more expensive than the last iPhone SE, which cost $429. This cost increase implies that Apple stands to earn $170 more on each of the lowest-priced iPhones it sells, potentially boosting total sales during a period when the number of phones it sells has remained relatively stable, at about 230 million phones per year.
The higher price follows President Trump’s imposition of a 10 percent tariff on all imports from China. However, experts assert that Apple’s decision to increase prices on its lowest-priced iPhone is likely unrelated to these tariff changes.
The extension of Apple Intelligence’s availability is crucial to the company’s efforts to fend off rivals and expand sales overseas. In China, Apple’s second-most-important market, the company’s share of smartphone sales fell 2.4 percentage points last year to 15.5 percent.
Moreover, the iPhone 16e marks Apple’s first custom-designed modem chip, the C1. This chip provides 5G connectivity and replaces the modem chips provided by Qualcomm. According to Ben Bajarin, chief executive of Creative Strategies, Apple’s custom modem will eventually enhance the battery performance of iPhones and bring wireless connectivity to other Apple products.
Apple’s iPhone 16e announcement was less flamboyant than usual, with the company posting a 13-minute film on its website featuring Mr. Cook describing the new phone. This contrasts with the one-hour event at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., when it introduced the iPhone SE in 2022.
