American Legion Posts Across the Nation Honor Vietnam War Veterans

The American Legion, a U.S. war veterans organization formed in 1919, will be commemorating National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29, 2025, by hosting and participating in various local events to honor the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam War era. This annual day of recognition provides a significant opportunity to pay tribute to approximately 9 million American veterans of the Vietnam War, remember the 58,000 servicemen and women whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and extend the overdue appreciation for those who returned from the war with little to no recognition.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day holds historical significance as it marks the anniversary of the day when the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam on March 29, 1973. Also, Operation Homecoming was completed on the same day, marking the return of the last of the 591 U.S. prisoners of war. On this day, American Legion posts from all corners of the country will conduct and participate in various events, thereby inviting Vietnam War veterans to honor, appreciate, and express gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

Several posts across the country have lined up events that include community gatherings, parades, recognition ceremonies, and meals. For example, in Madison, Alabama, American Legion Post 229 plans to collaborate with Redstone Harley-Davidson for a “Grill and Chill” event, providing free hot dogs, hamburgers, and live entertainment to honor the Vietnam War veterans. A similar event is planned by American Legion Post 49 in Santa Barbara, California, which is teaming up with Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 218 and The Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation for an event that includes a free lunch and ceremony.

Not only will veterans be honored and gratefully welcomed home, but they will also receive tokens of appreciation. In Endicott, New York, American Legion Post 82 is hosting an event where Vietnam veterans will be presented with a United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration Lapel Pin & certificate.

In other parts of the country, American Legion posts have organized heartfelt tributes. In Indiana, American Legion Post 141 is sponsoring the sixth annual National Vietnam War Veterans Appreciation Day Program. In Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, American Legion Post 114 will hold a pinning ceremony where State Rep. Abby Major will present lapel pins to all Vietnam veterans. In Houston, Texas, American Legion Posts 41 and 586 will host events that include free meals, games, and special recognition ceremonies.

No matter the location, the essence of these events is to celebrate, honor, and recognize the brave veterans who served during the Vietnam War era. As Mark Haake, a member of the Mason City Council and Finance Officer of Joe Barr Post 194 in Mason, Ohio states, “Vietnam vets didn’t get that welcome home. They were told not to wear their uniforms in public. People were spitting on them. It wasn’t right.” These events are an attempt to right the wrongs of the past and give these brave veterans the honor and recognition they were denied.

These planned activities across the country embody the spirit of the American Legion and its dedication to honoring the service and sacrifice of all veterans, particularly those from the Vietnam War era. This National Vietnam War Veterans Day, the American Legion posts nationwide are extending a heartfelt invitation to these veterans to attend these events and receive the recognition they deserved all along.
