Unusual Earthquake Shakes Boston, Originating from Maine

On the morning of January 27, 2025, an unusual tremor resonated beneath the city of Boston, Massachusetts, causing a brief ripple of anxiety among residents. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) later confirmed that the earthquake, with an unexpected magnitude of 3.8, was centered off York Harbor, Maine. The quake was noticeable not only in Boston but also in Rhode Island and New Hampshire, with a USGS map capturing the shockwaves.

Unforeseen Earthquake in a Typically Quiet Region

The earthquake struck at 10:22 a.m. and, despite initial reports alleging a magnitude of 4.1 and then 3.9, the adjusted magnitude still intrigued geologists. “This is like a once-in-every-five-years kind of earthquake,” John Ebel, a senior scientist with the Weston Observatory at Boston College told WBZ-TV. Notably, the earthquake was more than eight miles underground, according to the USGS.

However, New England was not under any tsunami threat, as reported by the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center. WBZ-TV executive weather producer, Terry Eliasen, highlighted that though Massachusetts doesn’t sit on any active fault lines, this quake was significant for the area.

Witness Accounts of the Earthquake

Residents felt the tremor for a few seconds, describing their homes shaking significantly. WBZ-TV anchor David Wade, living west of Boston, recounted how his house shook “pretty good” for what he estimated to be five or ten seconds. Similarly, Anna Fletcher, working from home in Milton, reported her house shaking.

Emergency services, in response to the quake, did not initially report any significant damage. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency issued a reminder to residents to “drop, cover and hold on for safety” during an earthquake.

Possibility of Aftershocks

Ebel stated that there will likely be seismically recorded aftershocks. If these aftershocks reach a magnitude around 2.8 to 3.1, they might be felt by people in the North Shore area of Massachusetts, coastal New Hampshire, and south coastal Maine.

Maine at the Epicenter of the Quake

Initial responses to the earthquake were captured in York County, Maine by police and fire scanner audio. Residents described their experiences, recounting things falling off shelves, houses shaking, and the sound of a loud boom. All of these reactions highlight the unusual nature of this event in the typically quiet region.

Checking for Home Damage

The Maine Emergency Management Agency advised residents to check their homes for any potential damage in the aftermath of the quake. They were specifically instructed to ensure that none of their flammable heating sources were compromised. This standard action is a reminder that, despite the rarity of earthquakes in this region, residents should still be prepared for such eventualities.
