Understanding Yeezy: A Controversial Brand Making Headlines

From the Super Bowl to social media, the name “Yeezy” has been making waves recently, but not necessarily for the most positive reasons. The brand, famously created by rapper Kanye West, has been at the center of several controversies, challenging the limits of edginess in fashion and testing the patience of both fans and critics alike.

Recently, during the Super Bowl, Yeezy made an unusual appearance in a commercial that left audiences baffled. West, the notorious rapper, who had been sending hate-filled messages on X (formerly known as Twitter), featured himself in a spot for his fashion and shoe brand. This was not your typical ad, as it showed West lying down at a dentist’s office, capturing the scene on an iPhone’s front-facing camera, all while wearing sunglasses.

The commercial’s oddity was further amplified by West’s comment about splurging all the money for the commercial on new diamond-encrusted teeth. The vague call-to-action to visit Yeezy.com only added to the bemusement. The website, upon visiting, offers an array of products from clothing and shoes to song snippets, CDs, and vinyl records.

However, it was a particular product that ignited a storm of controversy. On the night after the Super Bowl, Yeezy’s website featured only one item for sale – a T-shirt emblazoned with a swastika. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) quickly responded, condemning Kanye’s actions as anti-Semitic. The ADL especially took issue with the fact that the T-shirt was labeled on Kanye’s website as ‘HH-01,’ code for ‘Heil Hitler.’

As one would expect, this incident sparked widespread condemnation, with many questioning West’s motivations and the ethics of such a design. The Super Bowl ad, although not aired nationally, managed to stir up quite a discussion. It appeared to be a local purchase, paid for by Yeezy LLC, and was also aired on Fox several hours after the game ended.

Later in the evening, West took to X, now presumably known as Discord, to make a statement about his Twitter reach being limited. Shortly after, West deactivated his X account, with his management firm confirming the action.

Interestingly, this wasn’t Yeezy’s first rodeo at the Super Bowl. The brand had aired a spot the previous year as well. The ad seemed to be shot on West’s cellphone, with him talking directly into the camera whilst riding in a vehicle.

The recent commercial follows a week of headlines surrounding West. The rapper and his wife, Bianca Censori, had attended the 2025 Grammy Awards, where the couple made quite the impression with Censori’s daring outfit. The sheer minidress that she wore, revealing quite a bit, led West to defend his wife’s choice of attire.

Moreover, West has been firing off controversial and anti-Semitic tweets, praising Adolf Hitler, identifying as a Nazi, promoting the controversial Yeezy T-shirt design, denouncing the #MeToo movement, and revisiting his prior comments on slavery.

In response to the mounting controversies, a representative for Censori clarified that a post seemingly to be a plea for help over West, uploaded to a verified X account, was fake and did not belong to West’s wife. The management was working with X to unverify the account and ban it.

Yeezy, as controversial as it may be, continues to be a topic of discussion in the fashion industry and beyond, challenging norms and pushing boundaries, for better or for worse. As the brand moves forward, it will be intriguing to see how it navigates the waters of controversy and public opinion.
