Supporting Communities through Sport: FC Barcelona’s Philanthropic Efforts in Valencia

In the face of adversity, sport often serves not just as entertainment but as a beacon of hope, unity, and resilience. In this regard, FC Barcelona has historically been a shining example, not just making a name for themselves on the football pitch but proving their worth as a socially responsible organization committed to community welfare. The recent philanthropic efforts of the FC Barcelona Foundation in Valencia further solidify this perspective.

Following the disastrous flooding caused by the DANA (Isolated Depression in High Levels) in Benetússer, Catarroja and Paiporta in Valencia, the Foundation is now stepping in to help the affected areas. The tragedy last year led to massive damage, claiming 227 lives and severely impacting the infrastructure of the affected towns.

President Laporta, accompanied by the Foundation’s director, Dr Marta Segú and several Board of Director members, recently visited the affected towns. They announced that funds accrued from the Foundation’s activities would be utilized to restore the municipal sports centres in Benetússer and Catarroja, and the El Terrer municipal sports ground in Paiporta.

The football club’s delegation met with the mayors of the three towns, expressing their solidarity and offering direct financial assistance. Their concern is not only for immediate relief but also for the medium-term needs of the communities after the media spotlight has moved on. This planned assistance aligns with the Barça Foundation’s mission of using sport to enhance well-being and protect children and young people in vulnerable situations.

The FC Barcelona Foundation also organized a charity auction, auctioning the kit worn by the men’s first team players in the derby against Espanyol and in the game against Valencia. This initiative raised approximately €90,000, showcasing the power of sport in rallying support for a good cause.

In addition, the Foundation set up a Row 0 Support Fund, encouraging fans and members to contribute towards the restoration of the affected areas. The objective is to create safe spaces for children and youth to resume their outdoor activities and sports practices. This, they believe, will have a positive impact on their mental health, physical wellness, and emotional well-being.

The Foundation’s efforts highlight the significance of sport as a tool for bringing about social change. By stepping up in times of crisis, FC Barcelona continues to live up to their motto ‘Més que un club’ (More than a club). The club’s work in Valencia is not just financial aid; it is a testament to the solidarity and resilience of the human spirit, proving once again that the power of sport extends far beyond the pitch.
