Raiders Appoint Former Seahawks HC Pete Carroll as New Head Coach

Following the Raiders’ split with first-time coach Antonio Pierce, the Las Vegas Raiders have revealed their new head coach: experienced leader and Super Bowl winner, Pete Carroll. This move has been confirmed by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, as per sources privy to the situation.
At 73, Carroll, who has spent a year in a senior advisor role with the Seattle Seahawks, is set to return to the sidelines. The Raiders will be the fourth NFL franchise that Carroll has led. His vast experience and proven leadership skills are expected to bring a fresh and dynamic perspective to the team.
Carroll’s coaching career, which boasts a solid 170-120-1 regular-season record, kicked off 30 years ago with the New York Jets. Although his stint with the Jets lasted only a season, Carroll quickly rebounded as he took on the head-coaching role with the New England Patriots for three seasons (1997-1999). His stint with the Patriots was followed by an illustrious tenure in college football where he transformed USC into a powerhouse.
2010 saw Carroll making a return to the professional arena as he took over in Seattle. His 14-year reign with the Seahawks culminated in a Super Bowl XLVIII victory. The famous “Legion of Boom” defense was the brainchild of Carroll, who managed to maintain a competitive club throughout his tenure. Under Carroll’s watch, the Seahawks only missed the playoffs four times.
Following his departure from Seattle, Carroll slipped into an advisory role with the club, but his passion for coaching remained undimmed. His “Always Compete” mantra is expected to resonate well in Vegas, particularly with new minority owner Tom Brady on board. This move sees the Raiders transition from a novice coach to the oldest head coach in NFL history. Carroll, who turns 74 on September 15, surpasses the record held by Romeo Crennel, who was 73 years and 199 days old at the time of his last match as Texans interim coach during the 2020 season.
The appointment of Carroll adds to the wealth of experience in the AFC West, which boasts the likes of Andy Reid, Sean Payton, and Jim Harbaugh. All three have at least one Super Bowl win to their name, with Harbaugh having guided a team to the biggest game. Carroll and Harbaugh’s shared history in both college (USC and Stanford) and the NFC West (Seattle and San Francisco) heightens the anticipation for another round of veteran coach face-offs.
Carroll joins a Raiders team that is starving for a division title or a postseason victory, neither of which they have achieved since 2002. During this period, the club has seen just two playoff berths and 11 full-time head coaches. With Carroll’s record, expertise, and leadership, the desert may soon become a fertile playing field. However, he and new general manager John Spytek have significant roster challenges to overcome.
One of the primary concerns is how Carroll will assemble his staff, particularly on offense. The more critical issue is securing a quarterback. Vegas currently holds the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Speculation abounds that Carroll’s former Seahawks QB could be in the running, despite their tumultuous parting in Seattle. Only time will tell if Carroll can reignite the flame with Russell Wilson and spur the Raiders to a much-needed victory.
