Major Caribbean Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alerts

The Caribbean Sea recently experienced a significant geological event, shaking the region with a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake. The tremor triggered tsunami warnings across a broad range of countries, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre of the earthquake was located roughly 20 miles north of Honduras and about 130 miles south-west of the Cayman Islands.
Swift to respond, officials from various regions issued several tsunami alerts following the seismic event. Countries included in the warning were Colombia, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba. The National Weather Service, keeping a close eye on the situation, initially issued a tsunami advisory for potential hazards targeting Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. However, this alert was withdrawn approximately 45 minutes after its issuance.
Despite the cancellation of the initial alert, the National Tsunami Warning Centre advised residents in the affected areas to exercise caution. The Centre stated, “While alerts have ended, strong and unusual currents may continue. Be careful near the water and use caution.” The Centre further suggested that residents refer to the most recent information from local emergency management for updates.
However, the Cayman Islands’ government issued a stark warning to their residents, stating that the region remained “under a tsunami threat”. They further urged those living near the coastline to move inland to safer areas.
The USGS pointed out that large earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in this particular region of the plate boundary. For example, in 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in a nearby location. The event led to some damage and the formation of a small tsunami. The USGS added, “Luckily, the remote location of these earthquakes limits the potential for significant damage due to shaking.”
In a separate statement, the US National Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed that there were no alerts concerning the mainland US coast, thereby reducing the panic amongst the citizens residing there. This event is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of earthquakes and the importance of maintaining preparedness for such disasters, especially for those living in high-risk zones.
