Heart-stopping FA Cup Encounter: Manchester United Triumphs over Leicester City

Manchester United claimed a thrilling victory over Leicester City in a dramatic FA Cup match that left fans on the edge of their seats. The hero of the day was none other than Harry Maguire who scored a controversial injury-time goal, steering United into the last 16 of the FA Cup on February 7, 2025. Despite falling behind to a goal from Leicester’s Bobby De Cordova-Reid four minutes before halftime, United demonstrated resilience and determination to come from behind and clinch the 2-1 victory.
United’s equalizer came in the 68th minute courtesy of Joshua Zirkzee, setting the stage for Maguire’s decisive late goal. However, the winning goal sparked heated debates as some accused the England center half of being in an offside position. Unfortunately for Leicester, the FA Cup does not employ the VAR system, and the goal stood, much to the dismay of Leicester coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Expressing his discontent, the Leicester coach told broadcaster ITV, “This was half a meter (offside). Then extra time, stay in the game, you never know what happens. We deserved to go into extra time and maybe penalties. Decisions like these in our level are hard to swallow.”
This victory was not only celebrated for its sheer thrill, but it also marked a pivotal moment in United’s history. For the first time ever, the club has won three times at home against the same team in the same season. They had previously defeated Leicester 5-2 in the League Cup and 3-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
On the flip side, this result served as a bitter pill to swallow for Van Nistelrooy, the interim manager at United who had been moved on and taken charge at Leicester. Leicester City, a one-time FA Cup champion, had been 1-0 up at the break after De Cordova-Reid took advantage of a deflected low cross by Bilai El Khannouss, thanks to a dispossessed ball from Manuel Ugarte.
However, United’s comeback was ignited in the second half with the introduction of substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Zirkzee. Garnacho, in particular, made a significant impact that not only lifted the team’s spirit but also resulted in Zirkzee’s equalizer. That goal came from the simplest of finishes after an impressive effort by the Argentine player down the left flank.
Just as the game seemed destined for extra time, Bruno Fernandes launched a long ball into the box for Maguire to head home the winner. “(It was a) great finish to the game,” Maguire said. “The second half we played a lot better. The first half was nowhere near good enough, we played at a slow tempo and we didn’t really get going.”
Maguire also praised Garnacho for his influential role in the match, saying, “He always does that when he comes off the bench, so credit to him, he’s ready, he’s focused.” This match will undoubtedly go down in the annals of FA Cup history as one of the most thrilling encounters, underpinning the unpredictability and excitement of football.
