A Classic Thriller: Barcelona’s Dramatic Supercopa Triumph Over Real Madrid

The 2024-25 Spanish Supercopa final staged a dramatic battle between the two Spanish football giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. In a surprising turn of events, Barcelona managed to come from behind to cap off a 5-2 victory over Real Madrid. The victory marked Barcelona’s record-extending 15th trophy in the Spanish Super Cup.

Barcelona entered the game strong despite conceding an early goal from the star forward of Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé, in the fifth minute. The opening goal from Mbappé, who made a solo run from around the halfway line with a seamless shot inside the far post, initially put Madrid ahead. However, Barcelona quickly pivoted, showcasing their resilience and tenacity. Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Alejandro Balde all hit the target before halftime, turning the tables on Real Madrid.

Raphinha, the Brazilian forward, further stamped Barcelona’s dominance in the second half with another goal, making it 5-1, and effectively squelching any chances of a Real Madrid comeback. Despite being a man down after their goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, was sent off, Barcelona maintained composure and controlled the game effectively. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo scored from the resulting free kick, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

“A goal for big clubs is always to win titles, that’s why we work hard. But now we have to show it in the next games,” stated Hansi Flick, Barça’s coach. The victory was his first as the coach of Barcelona. Contrastingly, Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed his disappointment, highlighting how the team deviated from the planned strategy of playing football and resorted to hitting long balls in the first half.

With this win, Barcelona halted Real Madrid’s streak of winning titles. Madrid had previously won the European Super Cup against Atalanta and the Intercontinental Cup against Pachuca. The game also saw Barcelona’s defender Iñigo Martínez replaced by Ronald Araújo due to an injury.

The Supercopa final was the third consecutive meeting between the two teams in the competition’s final stage. Real Madrid had won the previous year, while Barcelona lifted the trophy in 2023. Both teams secured their spots in the final through decisive victories in the semi-finals; Barcelona won 2-0 against Spanish Cup holders Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid beat last year’s Copa del Rey finalists, Mallorca, 3-0.

The match was held at the King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah, at 2:00 PM on January 12, 2025. The thrilling game, full of spills and superstars on show, was precisely what the hosts and the fans had hoped for.
